Description

Around 1500, the time of its greatest cultural and intellectual significance, the lute became the preferred instrument at European courts. Humanists interpreted the lute as the lyre of Orpheus, as it embodied the metaphysical ideal of the power of music and was also closely associated with improvisation. On this album, this tradition has been revived. This resulted in a program that was almost entirely improvised. It presents the Renaissance lute, with all its surprising colors and timbres, as a still very much living instrument.
