The Glass Menagerie - A ballet by John Neumeier (Staatsoper Hamburg, May 2024, Choreography: Neumeier)

“The Glass Menagerie,” inspired by Tennessee Williams’s poignant drama, showcases John Neumeier’s extraordinary talent for telling stories through movement. At the center of this production is renowned ballet dancer Alina Cojocaru, who inspired John Neumeier to create this piece and masterfully portrays the protagonist’s mildly disabled sister. Together with the acclaimed Hamburg Ballet, she delivers a performance that touches the heart and resonates in the soul. In addition to fragments of individual pieces mentioned in Williams’s play, music by Charles Ives, Philip Glass, and Ned Rorem is heard. The Hamburger Symphoniker perform under the direction of Luciano Di Martino. This masterpiece is complemented by “John Neumeier – A Life for Dance,” Andreas Morell’s intimate documentary, which offers a glimpse into the passion and vision of one of the greatest choreographers of our time. This edition is a must-have for dance enthusiasts and lovers of profound forms of artistic expression.
