Description

In his time, the cellist, music professor and composer Georg Goltermann (1824–1898) was so popular and famous that it is no wonder to hear Pablo Casals perform the cantilena of his first (of eight!) cello concerto here. Melancholic, lyrical, mostly restrained, but with great virtuosity flashing up again and again: a picture-book Romantic cello concerto. The symphony, a Weltserstein recording, is also well worth listening to, with its post-Brahmsian gesture à la Bruch or Gänselheim, not least because of the exquisitely cheerful hunting scherzo and trio.
