Description

Sergei Taneyev was a key figure in Russian symphonic music in the late 19th century. A student of Rubinstein and Tchaikovsky, he resisted the nationalist dictates of the "Mighty Handful," integrating both Russian and Western elements into his music. As a teacher of Rachmaninoff and Scriabin, he opened the door to 20th-century modern Russian music. Thomas Sanderling's recordings of Taneyev's symphonies trace his development from the early influence of Brahms to the large-scale masterpiece of his final Symphony No. 4 and several rarely performed overtures.
