Description

Simon Steen-Andersen (* 1976) reveals the roots of his bold compositional style on “Chambered Music”. With four early works, this album explores the fusion of sound, gesture, and energy. Steen-Andersen defies conventional harmony by blending unusual texture, physicality, and ‘chamber music’ sounds into an original, captivating experience. Simon Steen-Andersen is a Berlin-based composer known for his transdisciplinary approach and his ambitious works, which often incorporate film and choreography, such as his opera “Don Giovanni” (2022), “TRIO” (2019), and “Piano Concerto” (2014). This album offers a unique retrospective insight with four playful and bold early works that demonstrate the development of Steen-Andersen’s recurring theme of defamiliarizing familiar elements. The composer is fascinated by ‘changing the perspective and meaning of familiar things by turning them upside down or changing their context’. For the title work “Chambered Music”, he collected ideas on how music or sound could be ‘chambered’, including a solo trombone placed ‘several doors or walls away from the hall’. The main source material of the work is the muffled reading of speech from the diaries of one of the most famous political prisoners in history. Another feature of Steen-Andersen’s works is the use of sounds that highlight the physical energies behind musical gestures, which is made audible in “Praesens” through sheets of paper rubbed against cardboard and a credit card drawn across the piano keys.
