Sophisticated Lady

Jazz is probably one of America's most distinctive art forms, revealing much about the state of the nation's soul to the rest of the world and to Americans themselves. And it was the jazz musicians who could be described as the secret ambassadors of American culture in post-war Europe and Asia. Today, jazz is no longer an "American" art form; some of the world's finest jazz clubs are located in Shanghai, Tokyo, London, Berlin, or Paris. The musicians of the quartet "Sophisticated Lady" dedicate their music to the great tradition of American jazz, even though most of their pieces were written by the band members. Unlike most contemporary jazz recordings, which are perfected to the smallest detail in post-production, the sound of "Sophisticated Lady" remains raw and fresh. This allows listeners to hear the music as it sounds live and without digital processing. There was very little rehearsal; only the keys, procedures, and solo orders were agreed upon. Of course, this only works with an ensemble that is wonderfully attuned to one another. The magic of complexity and the freedom of spontaneous improvisation make this recording something truly special.
