Sings Something Cool

The "cool" Miss June Christy is presented in a fantastic anniversary collection featuring her best musical pieces from her years with Stan Kenton and Pete Rugolo. Born in Illinois, Shirley Luster (1925–1990) became one of the leading figures of the vocal school founded by Anita O’Day as June Christy and, with her cool voice, became one of the most successful jazz singers. After her solo career in 1947, she was regularly in the charts, but is considered one of the most underrated singers of the post-swing era. She was blessed with a healthy yet uniquely sensual voice, and her radiant, effervescent personality came through in all her performances. She was equally convincing in fast swing numbers and thoughtful ballads.

The album "June Christy Sings Something Cool" presents the crème de la crème of her repertoire from her heyday from 1945 to 1960: 19 titles with the Stan Kenton Orchestra or the Kentones, including her two million-sellers "Tampico" and "Shoo Fly Pie And Apple Pan Dowdy", but also unforgettable interpretations of "How High The Moon", "It's Been A Long, Long Time", "Across The Alley From The Alamo" and "Willow, Weep For Me". The album also contains three quiet titles where she is accompanied only by Stan Kenton at the piano.
