Description
This 15-CD compilation is a tribute to Leif Segerstam (1944–2024), one of the greatest Jean Sibelius conductors of all time. Segerstam made a lasting impact on music history in many ways. His Sibelius recordings for Ondine were made during his more than ten years as chief conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra had been playing Sibelius for a long time—it had even worked with the composer himself. To this was added Segerstam's experience, his keen ear, and his creative energy—an ideal combination. In addition to Sibelius' complete symphonies and major orchestral works, this album also contains music by other Finnish composers who were active during Sibelius' lifetime, as well as classics of Scandinavian orchestral music, masterfully interpreted by Leif Segerstam. Some of these were recorded with the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra and the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra.
