From the 1980s, Leonard Bernstein conducted regularly in Munich. During this time, he came to especially appreciate and love the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Bernstein had appeared with an all-Beethoven program in October 1976, and in 1983 he began a series of annual concerts with the orchestra. In 1987, he rehearsed Franz Schubert's Great C major Symphony, which was performed in the Kongresshalle of the Deutsches Museum in Munich. The album contains not only the live recording of this concert event, but also a rehearsal recording as a bonus, a "Conductors in Rehearsal" segment that has been preserved in the Bavarian Radio's sound archives.
