Description

Dmitri Shostakovich is known for his symphonies, chamber music, perhaps also his popular suites and possibly a few of his film scores. His vocal-symphonic works, however, remain largely unknown; only the cycle "From Jewish Folk Poetry," Op. 79, has achieved a certain degree of popularity. This collection brings together these hidden treasures in authoritative performances conducted by Mikhail Jurowski and featuring the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, with its rich Shostakovich tradition (Rudolf Barshai, Semyon Bychkov et al.)—from the "Six Romances on Verses by Japanese Poets," Op. 21, to the "Suite on Verses by Michelangelo Buonarroti," Op. 145a. The "Six Poems by Marina Tsvetaeva," Op. 143a, and the more notorious than famous cantata for children's choir, mixed choir, and orchestra, "The Sun Shines over Our Motherland," Op. 90, are also genuine rarities.
