Shostakovich / Boulez: Violin Concertos [Silenced]

Violinist Hyeyoon Park, winner of the 2009 ARD International Music Competition, has made a name for herself as a soloist and chamber musician and has performed with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Kian Soltani, Timothy Ridout and Benjamin Grosvenor. "Silenced", her first album with Linn, which she recorded with Gergely Madaras and the WDR Symphony Orchestra, explores the works of two anti-regime composers. Shostakovich's first violin concerto was banned because of its "formalist distortions" and was not premiered until 1955, after Stalin's death. The concert piece by the Dutch composer Henriëtte Bosmans, who refused to join the Nazi-era Kultuurkamer, is introspective and bitter in tone. It was composed in a state of grief over the ban on her music. Shostakovich's Variations op. 3, a youthful academic exercise, concludes the album with a rousing finale.
