Schoenberg: Transfigured Night / Strauss: An Alpine Symphony

The Vienna Philharmonic subscription concerts in the Golden Hall of the renowned Musikverein are special concerts reserved for subscribers. Due to the exceptional quality of the concerts and the limited number of performances, the average waiting time for subscribers is more than 10 years. For one of these subscription concerts, the Vienna Philharmonic invited a long-time artistic companion to the podium: Christian Thielemann is linked to the traditional Vienna orchestra by more than 140 concerts and a multitude of acclaimed recordings. The live recording of his debut at the podium in the Vienna Musikverein almost 23 years ago immediately became the reference recording. Then as now on the program: Richard Strauss' monumental Eine Alpensinfonie. This work, which is often regarded as the culmination and pinnacle of the genre of "Symphonic Poem", stands opposite Arnold Schönberg's probably best-known tonal composition, the orchestral version of the string sextet "Verklärte Nacht". The expressive work composed in 1899 by the 25-year-old Schönberg reads in retrospect like a farewell to the 19th century. With this recording series, these very special concerts are made available to a wide audience worldwide for the first time in an audiovisual format.
