Franz Schmidt's symphonies, composed between 1899 and 1933, represent a development firmly rooted in the German-Austrian tradition. The contrapuntal mastery of Symphony No. 1, the command of variation in the Second Symphony, the harmonic refinement of the Third Symphony, and the most famous of the quartet, the elegiac and highly Romantic Symphony No. 4, all conjure up an unmistakable sound world and contain powerful expressive characteristics. The accompanying orchestral works, including the popular Intermezzo from the opera "Notre Dame", are equally powerful examples of his art. The recordings in this set, which were previously released individually between 2009 and 2010, were highly praised by BBC Music Magazine, which lauded Vassily Sinaïsky's "revealing cycle".
