Description

Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges was a brilliant fencer, athlete, violin virtuoso, and gifted composer who can rightfully claim to have been one of the most talented figures in an era of remarkable personalities. As a composer, he was an early and important proponent of the hybrid ‘Sinfonia concertante’—a genre that draws on both the symphonic and concert traditions. This innovative form provided an ideal platform for expressive inventiveness and offered new sonic possibilities by adding a second solo violin or viola.
