Rosner: Music for Symphonic Wind Ensemble

Arnold Rosner (1945–2013) was a New Yorker through and through, but his musical language transcended time and culture, clothing the modal harmony and rhythm of pre-Baroque polyphony in rich Romantic colors, creating a style that is instantly recognizable and immediately appealing. After writing his Eighth Symphony for a symphonic wind orchestra, he took a liking to this medium and composed seven more works for this popular fixture of American university life, none of which had been recorded before. Their inspiration is varied—from ethnic material and natural phenomena to religious impulses—but Rosner’s unerring balance between dignity and energy is common to all of them, shaping them with a sound that is uniquely his. The chamber orchestra Density512 is conducted by Jacob Aaron Schnitzer and Nicholas Perry Clark.
