Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade / Prokofiev: Scythian Suite

Sergei Prokofiev wrote his "Scythian Suite" in 1914, shortly after Stravinsky had also turned to the primitive and archaic with "Le sacre du printemps". Diaghilev was not, however, satisfied with the subject matter and music, which is why the piece was never performed on stage by the Ballets Russes. Rimsky-Korsakov's musical fairy tale "Scheherazade", based on four tales from "One Thousand and One Nights", had quickly established itself as a very popular work – which is why Diaghilev had the work, created in 1888, choreographed in Paris in 1910, during the second season of the Ballets Russes, and brought it to the stage.
