Raff: Choral Works a cappella

In addition to eleven romantic symphonies, various concert pieces and four operas, Joachim Raff composed a wide range of a cappella music. The former assistant and orchestrator of Franz Liszt is now considered one of the most important representatives of the North German School. In his sacred music, his own inner conflict between liberal progressiveness and intellectual Catholicism is evident. Between political revolutionary hymns and Marian antiphons, he succeeds in a musical journey from Cecilianism to late Romanticism. The Basel Madrigalists, under the direction of Raphael Immoos, interpret Raff's works, which thus deservedly return to the spotlight.
