Rachmaninoff: Symphony No. 3

In 1995, Kurt Sanderling conducted in Stuttgart not the version of the Chovantschina Overture published by Rimsky-Korsakov, but the version orchestrated by Shostakovich in 1959 based on Mussorgsky's original piano score. The other major work that evening was Rachmaninoff's Third Symphony. Rachmaninoff's symphonies were always a special concern of Kurt Sanderling. Sanderling himself summarized in 1956: "At that time I had a bit of a missionary feeling for Rachmaninoff, who was very unpopular in the West. Feeling was ... not shown, it was considered salon music. Today it is completely different, today everyone suddenly plays these symphonies of his, which I played as a missionary back then."
