Sergei Rachmaninov's Piano Sonata No. 1 in D minor is an underrated masterpiece of symphonic proportions and great dramatic power, depicting an enormous range of human emotions. The turbulent and brilliant Piano Sonata No. 2 in B minor is heard here in the revised 1931 version, which clarifies the textures and streamlines the work, thereby enhancing its emotional impact. In "The Isle of the Dead", Boris Giltburg plays the 1957 transcription by Georgy Kirkor, which he himself has extensively revised. Giltburg's expertise, especially with Rachmaninov, is undisputed in the musical world; his interpretations of these highly demanding works are considered distinctive and sensitive, while also virtuosic and brilliant.
