Giacomo Puccini's 'Madama Butterfly', one of the most frequently performed operas today, was actually performed for the first time ever on the lake stage in Bregenz in July 2022. The success was enormous: The audience was thrilled and the press praised the performing musicians. Andreas Homoki's delicate direction, Antony McDonald's colorful costumes and Michael Levine's striking set design (as always in Bregenz) with its subtle landscape paintings strike a balance between visually appealing spectacle and a production true to the work. The result is grand opera, visually appealingly realized.
