Prokofiev: The Player (Salzburg Festival 2024, Directed by: Sellars)

Prokofiev's "The Gambler" is based on a novella by Dostoevsky and is set in the fictional casino town of Roulettenburg, where a variety of characters come together and cross paths. Among these figures are a general who is indebted to a covetous marquis, the general's resentful stepdaughter, Polina, and Alexey, who has feelings for her. Director Peter Sellars, known for his sensitive interpretations of overlooked masterpieces, calls on us to emulate the courage of Dostoevsky and Prokofiev—the courage to confront our inner darkness.
