Description

Renata is obsessed with her love for the "fiery angel" and descends into madness. Ruprecht, who loves Renata, tries in vain to save her. Renata sinks further and further into delusions; her "fiery angel" himself remains mute, intangible. The revolutionary aspect of Prokofiev's opera was the absence of a (musical) counterweight to the madness. Not only Renata, but the entire world seems lost. Andrea Breth's production transforms all the protagonists into residents or staff of a psychiatric clinic. And it is not always clear who is acting in which role.
