Memories do not arise from nothing. Where ideas come from can be constructed, and even reconstructed, in terms of how an encounter with the world takes place in the mind. What is, will have been, with the consequence that it can no longer not have been. Without memory, we would have no authority to assert the past status of a memory or the virtual status of the future. We do not demand these things of the imagination and powers of invention, as these talents articulate, among other things, the fictitious and the possible.
