Pizzetti / Ghedini: Sacred Choral Works

With the release of this album, the Coro Euridice from Bologna achieves an important goal in promoting the works of two composers whose choral music stands at the forefront of 20th-century Italian choral music: Ildebrando Pizzetti (*Parma 1880; †Rome 1968) and Giorgio Federico Ghedini (*Cuneo 1892; †Genoa Nervi 1965). Unfortunately, most of these masterpieces are rarely included in concert programs and therefore remain little known. These compositions are stylistically very different, but their musical quality reveals a clear profile of the expressive depth and aesthetic consistency of early 20th-century Italian choral music. The imposing polyphonic structure of Pizzetti's Requiem and the 'Neo-Madrigalism' (as Massimo Mila called the musical style) adopted by Giorgio Federico Ghedini are each based on the inspiration of Gregorian chant and on the stylistic modules of the compositional heritage of the Renaissance, whose rediscovery forms the foundation of this music.
