What Carl Orff created with his "Prometheus" is neither an opera in the conventional sense nor an oratorio, but also not a musical play or even an authentic ancient tragedy. It is an extraordinarily original departure in the field of music theatre, a unique interpretation of Aeschylus's tragedy that focuses primarily on the symbolic imagery of the scenes. The concert performance of "Prometheus" was created on the occasion of the celebrations for Carl Orff's birthday in 1975. Rafael Kubelík assembled an excellent cast, in which Roland Hermann and Colette Lorand can be heard in the leading roles.
