Description
The Opéra Comique in Paris looks back on a long tradition of stylish performances that dates back to the 18th century. Five imaginative and critically acclaimed productions are included in this collection of French opera masterpieces. Georges Bizet's "Carmen," which premiered at the Opéra Comique in 1875, is performed on period instruments under the direction of Sir John Eliot Gardiner. In Ambroise Thomas's "Hamlet," the French star baritone Stéphane Degout is heard in the title role. André Messager embodies the spirit of the Belle Époque in "Fortunio"; Charles Gounod combines romance with the supernatural in "La Nonne sanglante"; and the outstanding French soprano Sabine Devieilhe takes the lead role in Léo Delibes' tragic tale of passion and fidelity, "Lakmé" - one of the jewels of the Opéra Comique.
