Venetian Christmas

This anthology of sacred works – all of which can be used in the liturgies of the Christmas celebrations – includes works by leading composers who were active in 16th and 17th-century Venice. They range from the earliest, Andrea Gabrieli, who died in 1585, to the latest, Francesco Cavalli, who died almost a century later, in 1676. At the center of this broad chronological spectrum are not only true giants such as Giovanni Gabrieli and Claudio Monteverdi, but also prominent masters who were associated with them, such as the Saxon composer Heinrich Schütz, Giovanni Bassano and Alessandro Grandi. This recording puts the choir Il Pomo d'Oro in the spotlight, which was founded in 2021 alongside the instrumental ensemble of the same name and, under the direction of specialist Giuseppe Maletto, has also performed numerous a cappella concerts.
