Description

As a duo, GlossArte brings Renaissance and Baroque gems to life for modern ears. The uniquely refined sound of the silver trombone, enhanced by harpsichord or organ accompaniment, takes us on a journey around the Mediterranean. The instrument's bright lightness is particularly evident in surprisingly virtuosic passages, such as Francesco Rognoni's diminutions on Orlando di Lasso's once-famous hit "Susanna d'Orlando", one of the earliest works ever explicitly written for the trombone. But Rognoni also knew how to masterfully exploit its lyrical qualities, for example in his arrangement of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina's "Pulchra est anima mea". Palestrina's austerity meets pure emotion: at the beginning of the 17th century, the "stile moderno" was gradually replacing the polyphony of the "stile antico", and affect and expressivity now dominated music. The expressive range that Juan González Martínez conjures up on his trombone finds a fanciful and charismatic counterpart in Lea Suter at the harpsichord and organ. The GlossArte duo follows in the footsteps of the virtuosos of the time and brings one of the most fascinating eras in music history to captivating new life.
