With the "Méditation," Jules Massenet arguably composed one of the most famous melodies of our time. It comes from the opera "Thaïs," which, however, never quite made it into the international opera repertoire in its entirety, presumably because the two lead roles are required to perform something bordering on the superhuman. In the 2021 production of the opera by Peter Konwitschny at the Theater an der Wien, the phenomenal American soprano Nicole Chevalier and the young Austrian bass-baritone Josef Wagner succeeded in doing just that. The result is an altogether fascinating and musically outstanding performance and an absolute enrichment of the opera repertoire.
