Composers: Massenet, Jules
Artists: Campbell, Alexander · Clarke, Reece · Osipova, Natalia
Jules Massenet's "Manon" as a story of poverty, desire and tragedy with the acclaimed dancers Natalia Osipova and Reece Clarke in the leading roles: torn between their desire for a life of splendor and wealth and their devotion to their true love, Des Grieux (Reece Clarke), the seductive and capricious Manon (Natalia Osipova) pays the ultimate price. Kenneth MacMillan's adaptation of Abbé Prévost's novel "L'Histoire du Chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut" embodies his keen insight into human psychology and his mastery of narrative choreography. This is MacMillan at his best: He finds full expression in the passionate duets of the central couple, which are instinctive and poignant in their desire. The Royal Opera House orchestra is thoughtfully conducted by Sergey Levitin.
