Margola: Works for Violin and Guitar

Franco Margola's chamber music for guitar was composed primarily in his later years. Although Margola was originally a violinist, he wrote more than 450 works for guitar starting in 1967. His music combines neoclassical clarity with Baroque-influenced counterpoint and remains consciously distant from the avant-garde movements of his time.

At the heart of this recording are the "Sonata in G major" DC 242 and the "Sonatina" DC 259 for violin and guitar from 1979 and 1980. They are complemented by shorter pieces for violin and guitar, viola and guitar, and solo guitar, including several previously unreleased works. Characteristic is the close chamber-musical connection between the instruments: the guitar does not merely accompany, but assumes an independent, contrapuntal role.

The performers are Mauro Tortorelli and Luciano Tortorelli, who have been exploring the Italian repertoire of the 20th century for many years. With this recording, they dedicate themselves to a composer whose extensive body of work is still little known.
