The eight Mahler symphonies contained in this box (only Symphony No. 3 and the fragment of the 10th are missing) were all recorded live during the Leipzig Mahler Cycle, which began with the acclaimed Mahler Festival in 2011. They once again confirmed the Gewandhaus Orchestra's reputation as one of the most important Mahler reference orchestras, a status that was further solidified by the intensive engagement with Mahler's oeuvre under the direction of the then Gewandhauskapellmeister Riccardo Chailly.
