Description

Mahler's Sixth is a career highlight and a statement for any conductor who conducts it. No other Mahler symphony is performed so differently, and there are often considerable differences in playing time between different interpreters. Daniel Harding adopts an extremely brisk pace here with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. His Mahler Sixth has an enormous amount of power. Harding interprets it as a single restlessness. The "paradisiacal" passages (cowbells, pastoral idyll) are in his interpretation rather fleeting, deceptive dreamlike schemes, intermediate stops in a vicious circle that reaches a climax with the notorious "hammer blows of fate" that is unique in the entire history of symphonic music. Harding approaches this piece very psychologically and drives the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra to peak performance. A must-listen!
