Description

In the second half of her long life, Ester Mägi (1922–2021) was known as the "First Lady of Estonian Music." Her modest, charming manner made her beloved by all who met her. However, it is in her music that the true strength of her personality is revealed, and this first complete recording of her songs for female voice – spanning over half a century of compositional activity – covers an impressive emotional range, from the ambivalent feelings of falling in love to dramatic ritual invocations of astonishing power and strength. Many of the earlier songs are overtly romantic, but Mägi soon began to harness the hypnotic energy of Estonian runic songs, which are reminiscent of village life and were used to soothe a hostile environment.
