Locke: Hear the Songs

Josef Locke (1917–1999) was one of Ireland's most popular tenors and for decades was one of the major stars of the British music hall and entertainment scene. With his warm, unmistakable voice, he captivated millions and made songs like "Hear My Song, Violetta" classics of his repertoire.

"Hear the Songs of Josef Locke" brings together 52 of his most famous recordings and offers a representative cross-section of his artistic work. The program ranges from sentimental ballads and Irish folk songs to operetta melodies, as well as sacred and Italian songs, painting a portrait of a singer who consciously chose against the opera stage and instead achieved international fame as an interpreter of popular vocal music. In the early 1990s, Locke experienced a late rediscovery thanks to the feature film "Hear My Song," which is loosely based on his extraordinary life story, and thus gained a new audience.
