Leipzig 1723 - Telemann, Graupner, Bach

1723 marked a new era in Leipzig: Johann Sebastian Bach was appointed Thomaskantor and was to shape German music history like few other composers. But first, the preferred candidate, Georg Philipp Telemann, had to decline, choosing to remain in Hamburg. The next favorite, Christoph Graupner, also did not take the position because he could not obtain a release from his employer in Darmstadt. Hard to believe: Bach was only the third choice.
