Legendary Recordings

SWRmusic is the label of the Südwestrundfunk (SWR). Its purpose is to document the artistic output of the internationally renowned SWR ensembles, including outstanding archival recordings of famous musicians. For the label's 25th birthday, this box set of six albums is being released, representing the work of the broadcaster's ensembles in collaboration with major artists. Roger Norrington opens the set, conducting three symphonies by Joseph Haydn, followed by pianist Clara Haskil, who performs two piano concertos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Michael Gielen conducts Gustav Mahler's 5th Symphony, and Hans Rosbaud leads the orchestra through various orchestral sequences from Richard Wagner's operas. The SWR Vocal Ensemble follows, performing works by Anton Bruckner, and Eliahu Inbal concludes the set, conducting Dmitri Shostakovich's 5th Symphony. The SWR Symphony Orchestra calls the Liederhalle Stuttgart and the Konzerthaus Freiburg home. Emerging in September 2016 from the merger of the SWR Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra and the SWR Baden-Baden and Freiburg Symphony Orchestra, approaches to interpretation rooted in historically informed performance practice, the core classical-romantic repertoire, and contemporary music are all equally part of its artistic profile. The orchestra's profile is rounded out by its own concert series, festival appearances, and collaborations with international conductors and distinguished soloists.
