In the midst of the magnificent court, the young Louis XIV discovered the allure of the harpsichord. He was surrounded by the most renowned harpsichordists of his time, who passed the musical treasure from hand to hand. While French harpsichord making was enjoying its heyday, Jacques Champion de Chambonnières published the first printed music in 1670. From freely composed preludes and deeply moving tombeaux imbued with a delicate melancholy to artful arrangements of popular tunes, the harpsichord during the reign of Louis XIV reflects an era of musical richness unlike any that had come before. Brice Sailly's masterful interpretation brings the splendor and diversity of this golden age of the French harpsichord into new brilliance.
