La Traviata

“La traviata” is based on the novel and play “La Dame aux camélias” by Alexandre Dumas fils. His work, in turn, was inspired by the life of the real-life Parisian courtesan Marie Duplessis. The opera tells the deeply moving story of a courtesan who is prepared to sacrifice everything for love. It contains some of Verdi’s most beautiful arias and duets and is surely one of the most important operas in history. Soprano Ermonela Jaho shines in the title role of Violetta Valéry, demonstrating her phenomenal talent as one of the great sopranos of the future. Beside her, Charles Castronovo makes a fine impression as her lover Alfredo, while Plácido Domingo appears as Alfredo’s morally upright father Giorgio Germont in this highly successful Royal Opera production. Richard Eyre’s compellingly naturalistic production features breathtaking designs by his collaborator Bob Crowley. Italian conductor Antonello Manacorda conducts Verdi’s sublime score, which serves as a wonderful showcase for the exceptional quality of the Royal Opera’s orchestra and chorus.
