Description

On the snow-covered island of Skiathos, a miraculous Christmas Eve unfolds. This recording combines spoken word with song and brings to life “Christ at the Castle” by Alexandros Papadiamantis, the Greek Dostoevsky. Papa Frangouli and his congregation brave treacherous seas and cliffs to reach an abandoned sanctuary, where they light a fire that illuminates the ancient frescoes. But as the Divine Liturgy begins, shipwrecked sailors call for help, and further acts of courage are needed. Composed by Kyriakos Kalaïtzidis according to the eight modes of Byzantine chant and sung in the rhymed, fifteen-syllable Greek verses of the author Vasiliki Nevrokopli, “Christmas at the Castle” tells an epic story of how a broken promise and unexpected adversities lead to redemption and simple yet wonderful celebrations on Christmas Eve. The physical product contains a 32-page booklet with a detailed essay, photographs, and all the texts in the original Greek and in English translation, as well as notes by the composer.
