John Cranko's Onegin (Stuttgart, 2017)

Just like the first release from the new label Unitel Edition became a bestseller! It was the moving documentary A League of Her Own for this year's Birgit Nilsson birthday. Now comes the second release from the new label, and once again it is a top title, because John Cranko's Onegin, one of the most successful ballets of the 20th century, takes center stage. For lovers of romantic-dramatic ballet, Cranko's legendary production stands alone, and when world stars like Friedemann Vogel and Alicia Amatriai dance here, this first DVD/Blu-ray production of John Cranko's most successful production secures its place in the pantheon of the greatest choreographers of the 20th century. The story of this ballet began in 1965 when Cranko became artistic director of the Stuttgart Ballet. In the following 50 years, the choreography was taken up by almost every major ballet company in the world and became one of the most successful ballets of all time. The accompanying performance is enveloped in a touch of nostalgia when the now 80-year-old Marcia Haydée takes the stage once again in her guest role as a nurse. Haydée was the first Tatiana in Cranko's very first production of Onegin in 1965. Thus, the circle is complete – goosebumps guaranteed!
