Description

"Simply phenomenal" (Fanfare) – British-American clarinetist Jean Johnson makes her Linn debut alongside her husband, pianist Steven Osborne. A keen chamber musician who has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, Jean has put together a program of beautiful Romantic works. Although Brahms does not feature on this recital, he links all four works together. Gustav Jenner was his only long-term pupil; the stylistic influence of his teacher can be felt in Jenner's Clarinet Sonata, an ambitious work that brings out the instrument's natural melodiousness. Robert and Clara Schumann were friends and mentors to Brahms, and Jean has recorded arrangements of their Romances. Weber fittingly concludes the program – Brahms postponed his retirement from musical life after hearing his clarinet concerto – with the Grand Duo Concertant.
