Description

After Maurice Maeterlinck had already proven to be a prolific source of operatic material with *Pelléas et Mélisande* and *Ariane et Barbe-Bleue*, it was no wonder that his play *The Blue Bird* (*L’Oiseau bleu*, 1908) was also soon adapted for music. Max Reinhardt adapted the work as a Christmas play for his Berlin stage, complete with incidental music by none other than Engelbert Humperdinck. This music remained in an unpublished state until Steffen Tast, a violinist in the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, made it audible once again.
