Humperdinck: The Miracle

Engelbert Humperdinck's music for the pantomime of Karl Gustav Vollmöller's "Das Mirakel", widely considered the most important stage work, impresses with its deeply romantic sound language and large-scale choral scenes, and has hitherto lived in an unforgivable shadow in the composer's catalogue. Premiered in London in 1911, this work was adapted for film (1912) by none other than Max Reinhardt, who staged numerous performances with hundreds of actors, extras, and dancers – ultimately also at the Salzburg Festival in 1925. This recording now provides the first complete recording of this deeply romantic masterpiece. Steffen Tast conducts the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, and two choirs sing in the interlude, namely the Rundfunkchor Berlin and the Children's Choir of the Georg-Friedrich-Händel-Gymnasium in Berlin, as well as the internationally renowned soprano Sophie Klussmann and the mezzo-soprano Josette Micheler.
