“But tell me, who could have written me a better libretto than my friend Heinrich von Kleist? When I was looking for a language in whose unity my music could achieve something new, a language for which my music was destined, ‘The Prince’ came my way.” – Hans-Werner Henze. “The Prince of Homburg” from 1960 is one of Hans-Werner Henze’s central operas. The libretto based on Kleist’s play was written by none other than Ingeborg Bachmann, one of the most important German-language lyricists and prose writers of the 20th century. Dedicated to Igor Stravinsky, Henze’s musical language in The Prince actually contains intellectual and musical references to Stravinsky. For years, no recording of the opera was available.
