Sunny, funny and with more “tra-la-las” per square inch than any other opera in the repertoire, “The Gondoliers” is a delight from start to finish. The twelfth of Gilbert & Sullivan’s fourteen operas, it has been a public favourite since its premiere in 1889. The melodies are infectious, the romantic and domestic conflicts touching, and the satire on rank and status always entertaining and topical. This co-production by the Scottish Opera, the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company and the State Opera South Australia was brought to life by some of the world’s leading G&S enthusiasts and experts.
