Galuppi: The Effeminate Man

Welcome to an island where gender roles are turned radically upside down! Here, Princess Cretidea reigns as a warrior ruler over submissive men condemned to vanity and a superficial cult of beauty. The unexpected arrival of Roberto and Giannino, castaways from a patriarchal world, disrupts the established order in this opera buffa and sets the stage for an enjoyable conflict in which identities collide and reveal themselves. This visionary satire by Baldassare Galuppi and Pietro Chiari is more than just a historical curiosity: it holds up an unsettling mirror to us and invites us to decipher, between the notes, the instability of our own identities and the timeless pursuit of equality. Under the masterful direction of Vincent Dumestre, Le Poème Harmonique breathes new life into this forgotten score, revealing its Baroque brilliance and astonishing modernity.
