Miguel Bonal was born in Zaragoza in 1999 and began playing the viola da gamba at the age of seven. He continued his studies at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, from which he graduated with highest honors. For his first solo recital, released as part of the "Baroque Stories" series dedicated to young talent, he has compiled a program of seminal works for the viola da gamba – supplemented by cleverly chosen transcriptions. It ranges from the powerful, pithy music of Tobias Hume, through the refined elegance of Marin Marais and Carl Friedrich Abel, to the virtuosic playfulness of Johann Schenck and the stylistic mastery of Telemann. Miguel Bonal also allows us to experience the full mystery of Bach's second Cello Suite in D minor, here performed on the viola da gamba. And he dares to leap into the 19th century with Gabriel Fauré's famous "Après un rêve" and Francisco Tárrega's "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" – further proof that this instrument effortlessly transcends the centuries.
