This album contains folk songs of the Uyghur peoples, who live mainly in the Uyghur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang in the northwest of the People's Republic of China. The album contains folk music from the Ili region in northern Xinjiang, from Kashgar and Artux in southern Xinjiang, as well as excerpts from the twelve Uyghur muqams, a series of modal melodic sequences used in traditional Uyghur music. Typical Uyghur instruments such as the rawap, dap, tambur, and dutar are featured.
