Flury: Orchestral Music Vol. 6

Swiss composer Richard Flury completed his Fifth Symphony in 1956—a time when its consciously melodic and tonal language represented a clear counter-proposal to the prevailing currents of musical modernism. Influences of late Romantic composers such as Anton Bruckner, Richard Strauss, and Joseph Marx shape the work, as does Flury’s close bond with nature. The landscape of his Swiss homeland forms a central space of inspiration for his creative work and is tangibly present even in seemingly abstract compositions such as this symphony. This closeness to nature is particularly evident in the programmatically conceived orchestral pieces and suites, which musically reflect forests, valleys, and alpine moods.

As with the previous volumes 3–5, Paul Mann conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra in this sixth installment of the complete recording of Flury’s orchestral works.
